Today, I officially started work at Luxottica as their Luxury Department Store Sales intern. Coupled with my move to the city last night, I can finally (if temporarily) call myself a bonafide New Yorker. With an unlimited Metro Pass in hand and a morning commute I've only just learned how to complain about, I'm beyond excited for what the next few months will hold.
As for the start of those next few months: I spent my day at Casa Luxottica (the company's gorgeous Port Washington, NY offices) learning the in's and out's of the world's most innovative eyewear company. Like any dorky intern, I overdressed the first day and wore a wool blazer to a "smart casual" office in 90 degree weather. But hey, it's the thought that counts.
Over breakfast, I met an incredible intern class of 13, representing a Who's Who of elite universities from all over the country. Luxottica Wholesale's President even addressed the group, asking us about our goals for the summer. He even went around the table of interns, learning our names and asking us individually about our favorite Luxottica brands and why we loved them.
Long story short, I quoted American Psycho to my boss' boss' boss' boss. He belly-laughed, applauded my choice, and welcomed me to the Luxottica team. Nothing makes a nervous sales intern feel better than the head of a continent telling the room that "this guy's in the right place." If this is Day One, I can't wait to see what lies ahead.
After breakfast, we met more of the Luxottica team (including Elizabeth, our wonderful Intern program coordinator), got acquainted with the company's values, and learned more about some of the 30+ eyewear brands we'd be representing through our work. Then, it was time for lunch (featuring the obligatory San Pellegrino) and a meet-and-greet with our direct reports.
We took a quick tour of the gorgeous Port Washington offices, then it was time to start our first afternoon of work.
I'm lucky enough to be working with the talented Luxury Department Store Sales Team out of the Midtown NYC office, so today's time was spent learning the ropes instead of settling into a desk on Long Island. Kaitlynn (Luxottica's luxury sales coordinator) walked me through some of the work I'd be doing this summer, but took special care getting to know me rather than just lecturing about purchase orders. At 5:00, we left the offices to take the LIRR back into Midtown - a long commute, but well worth it.
Between the friendly people, beautiful offices, and welcoming atmosphere, I loved my first day at Luxottica. Even though it's only day one, I think I've found a truly wonderful place to learn and work.
Couple that with an unlimited MetroPass, a whole island to explore, and 8 million people to share it with, and I can't wait but see what lies ahead. Start spreading the news - Alex vs. New York starts today. Bongiorno, summer of a lifetime.
