The best birthday presents fall in two distinct categories: thoughtful guesses given by close friends, or self-indulgent splurges. Considering Mercedes tuner AMG’s reputation for indulgence (hint: mindless, self-directed, and often), you can probably bet how they celebrated.

Hint: it’s loud, grey, and stupid quick.

It’s the GT C Edition 50.

Falling neatly between the recently-refresh GT S and the long-awaited GT R, the GT C (unveiled Monday at the 2017 North American International Auto Show in Detroit) is the standard rear-drive AMG formula dipped in Affalterbach anniversary. AMG’s 50th Anniversary GT isn’t just some cheap rebadge, either - this bacchanalia runs bone deep.

Don’t believe me? Just look around. The signs are everywhere. For one, the 4.4L twin-turbo V8 that powers the GT S is hopped up on cake and punch and now pushes 550bhp and 502lb/ft of torque exclusively to the rear wheels. That's good for 0-60 in 3.6 seconds, a stone’s throw away from its big brother SLS. For two, it sports an exclusive matte-on-chrome black trim decked out in Edition 50 branding. For three, it’s limited to – drumroll please – 50 units worldwide.

After a half-century of making the most brawling cars on Earth, AMG was certainly due for a proper commemoration. In true Teutonic spirit, they didn’t wait for gifts to be given; rather, they knew what they want and simply made it. With the ultra-hardcore Mercedes-AMG GT R still a ways off, this upper-middle GT couldn’t have come at a better time.
